FAQs

VCF® Contraceptive Gel

How effective is VCF contraceptive Gel?

VCF is 94% effective when used properly. Be sure to read the enclosed directions carefully. It will be effective for up to 1 hour, or for each act of intercourse. Use a new applicator for each act of intercourse.

Can I use it after intercourse and have it still be effective?

No, a new applicator/dose must be used with each act of intercourse.

Is it safe for breastfeeding mothers?

Yes VCF is non-hormonal and safe for breastfeeding mothers.

Is it possible to have an allergic reaction to VCF?

True allergic reactions to VCF are rare, but some people may experience temporary sensitivity or irritation to its ingredients. This is more commonly due to individual sensitivity rather than an actual allergy.

If you notice discomfort, discontinue use and drink plenty of water—symptoms should subside within 24 to 48 hours. If irritation persists or worsens, consult a healthcare provider to determine the cause and explore alternative options.

Is it harmful if ingested?

VCF contains Nonoxynol-9, which is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic, as well as other ingredients commonly found in personal care products. While it’s not intended to be swallowed, accidental ingestion is not harmful.

Some people may experience mild tingling or numbness on the tongue or lips, but these sensations should pass quickly. If discomfort occurs, drinking plenty of water can help. Glycerin, one of the ingredients, is even found in many prepared foods.

Does VCF protect against STIs such as HIV?

No VCF does not protect against HIV or STDs. It is strongly suggested that you contact your health professional for the best method of STD prevention and HIV protection. Studies have raised concerns that products containing the spermicide nonoxynol-9 can irritate the vagina and rectum, which may increase the risk of getting HIV/AIDS from an infected partner. Therefore, we recommend using a latex condom without nonoxynol-9 if you or your partner have HIV/AIDS, multiple sex partners or HIV risk factors.

Should I be using more than one method of birth control?

Using multiple forms of birth control can provide added protection, especially if one method fails, but it does not guarantee 100% effectiveness. No single method is completely foolproof, and combining options, such as VCF with condoms, can help reduce the risk of pregnancy while also providing protection against sexually transmitted infections.

However, VCF should only be used one film at a time, and it should not be combined with othe Nonoxynol-9-based products. When used correctly, VCF is 94% effective, making proper use essential for the best results. Choosing the right combination of methods is a personal decision based on your needs and comfort level.

Proper use and how do I use it?

To use VCF Applicator Gel, remove the pre-filled applicator from its packaging and insert the tip close to the cervix. Push the plunger to release the gel, then withdraw the applicator.

The gel is effective immediately and provides protection for up to one hour per application. Be sure to use a new applicator for each act of intercourse and do not douche or rinse for at least six hours after use to maintain effectiveness. For best results, always follow the detailed instructions included in the box to ensure proper use.

Can I have oral sex while using the product?

Yes, the ingredients in VCF are non-toxic. Some users may notice a slight change in taste or texture if oral sex occurs after application. To minimize this, consider allowing the gel to settle for a moment after application, as this can help prevent any excess from moving downward.

Is it is safe to use lubricants with VCF and in conjunction with other forms of birth control for added protection against pregnancy?

A lubricant may be used with the contraceptive film, but we strongly recommend that you insert the Gel first and it to then utilize a lubricant.

Can I use 2 applicators/products at the same time?

Using more than one applicator of VCF Gel at a time is not recommended. Each single-use applicator contains the necessary amount of Nonoxynol-9 to provide protection when used correctly. Applying more than the recommended amount may cause irritation for some users.

If additional protection is desired, consider pairing VCF Gel with another form of birth control, such as condoms. Always follow the instructions included with the product to ensure safe and proper use.

Can I go in a pool or a hot tub?

We do not recommend inserting the Gel and then entering a pool or hot tub as this may cause the spermicide to be washed out of the body prematurely and consequently lessen or even totally eliminate its effectiveness.

Nonoxynol-9 – Is the active ingredient that acts as a spermicide. How much N-9 is in the product?

Gel – 4%, this translates to roughly 100 milligrams per applicator

How long does it last?

Irritation

A small number of people may experience sensitivity to Nonoxynol-9, the active ingredient in VCF Film and Gel. If you notice irritation, it may help to pause use and drink plenty of fluids Symptoms typically subside within 24 to 48 hours. If irritation persists, consult a physician to determine the exact cause. For best practices, you may also review the instructions included with the product.

Yeast Infection

VCF products do not directly cause yeast infections, but changes in the vaginal environment— such as shifts in moisture levels—can sometimes lead to an environmental imbalance, making yeast overgrowth more likely. If you experience discomfort, drink plenty of water and symptoms should subside within 24–48 hours.

If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider to determine the cause and find th best course of action.

Gel - How does it work?

VCF Gel creates a protective barrier at the entrance to the cervix while delivering Nonoxynol-9, an active ingredient that works by disrupting sperm cell membranes on contact. Once applied, the gel spreads within the vaginal tract, maintaining coverage for up to one hour.

For best results, apply the gel close to the cervix and allow it to coat the area before intercourse. A new applicator is required for each act of intercourse to ensure continued effectiveness.

Gel - The inside of the applicator looks empty.

The pre-filled applicator barrel is filled, but the gel settles to the bottom during the packaging and shipping process. Even if the contents aren’t visible the contents will be expressed with the aid of the plunger during use.

VCF® Vaginal Contraceptive Film

How effective is VCF contraceptive film?

Effectiveness depends on correct and consistent use. VCF works best when properly placed, given time to dissolve, and used before each act of intercourse. Each film provides protection for up to three hours.

For added peace of mind, some users choose to pair VCF with other non-hormonal methods like condoms. If you’re looking for a flexible, hormone-free option, VCF is designed to fit your rhythm.

Can I use it after intercourse and have it still be effective?

No, a new applicator/dose must be used with each act of intercourse.

Is it safe for breastfeeding mothers?

Yes, VCF is a non-hormonal contraceptive and is safe for breastfeeding mothers. Because it does not contain hormones, it won’t affect milk supply or composition.

Is it possible to have an allergic reaction to VCF?

VCF is generally well-tolerated, though some individuals may experience irritation or sensitivity to its ingredients. If you notice any discomfort, we recommend discontinuing use and drinking plenty of fluids to help ease symptoms. In most cases, any irritation should subside within 24 to 48 hours.

If symptoms persist or feel severe, it’s always best to check in with your healthcare provider to determine the cause and find the best solution for you.

Is it harmful if ingested?

Nonoxynol-9, the active ingredient in VCF, is an FDA-approved spermicide that has been extensively studied for both safety and effectiveness. It is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic, and many of its ingredients are commonly found in personal care products used daily.

Accidental ingestion of VCF is not considered harmful, though some individuals may experience temporary tingling or numbness on the lips or tongue. This is due to the presence of anti-ionic detergents in Nonoxynol-9, which function similarly to those found in certain soaps. If any mild discomfort occurs, drinking fluids can help alleviate the sensation, and symptoms typically resolve quickly on their own.

Additionally, VCF is formulated to remain in place once inserted at the cervix, ensuring that it does not dissolve or spread beyond its intended use. One of its key ingredients, glycerin, is widely used in food and skincare products, further reinforcing its safety profile.

While there is no cause for concern if VCF is accidentally ingested, we always recommend consulting a healthcare professional if you have any specific questions or experience unexpected symptoms.

Using multiple forms of birth control can provide an added layer of protection, but no method is 100% effective on its own. Combining methods, such as using VCF alongside condoms, may help reduce the risk of pregnancy while also providing protection against sexually transmitted infections. However, the decision to use more than one method is entirely up to the user’s discretion and individual needs.

It is important to note that VCF should not be used with another Nonoxynol-9 product or multiple films at the same time, as this will not increase effectiveness. Consistency and correc use of any birth control method remain key factors in maximizing protection.

Proper use and how do I use it?

Although no birth control is 100% effective, any method that is used consistently and correctly will be more effective. Proper use is as follows: Remove the pre-folded film from the sealed pouch. Place it on the tip of your clean, dry second or third finger. Insert the film quickly and as high as you can comfortably go. Allow 15 minutes to dissolve. It will be effective for up to 3 hours, or for each act of intercourse. If you follow these instructions, you will have inserted the film properly.

The film sticks to my finger.

If the film is sticking to your finger, it’s likely due to moisture or hesitation during insertion. For best results, ensure your fingers are completely dry before handling the film. Hold it on the tip of your finger and insert it quickly in one smooth motion, placing it as close to the cervix as possible.

There’s no need to reposition the film once inserted-overhandling can cause it to dissolve prematurely. Trust the process, insert confidently, and let the film do the work.

Many users wonder if they’ve placed the film correctly, but precise placement is not critical for effectiveness. When inserted as directed, VCF dissolves and forms a protective gel near the cervix, releasing spermicide to prevent pregnancy.

A perfect seal at the cervix is not necessary- what matters is that the film is placed high in the vagina, where it can properly dissolve and disperse. Its primary function is not just to act as a barrier but to actively eliminate sperm upon contact. As long as the film is inserted correctly and given time to dissolve, it is designed to work as intended.

Is the film in the correct place?

It’s normal to wonder if you’ve placed the film correctly, but as long as it is inserted close to the cervix, it will dissolve and distribute evenly for effective protection. The film is designed to coat the vaginal tract rather than remain in a single spot, ensuring thorough coverage.

Once inserted, there’s no need to adjust or reposition it—just allow it to dissolve as intended, and it will provide the protection you need.

Can I have oral sex while using the product?

Yes, the ingredients in VCF are non-toxic. Some users may notice a slight taste or texture change if oral sex occurs after insertion. Waiting until the film has fully dissolved (15 minutes) can help minimize any noticeable residue.

Tip: If you’d rather not wait, consider switching up the order—oral sex first, then insert the film before continuing with foreplay or focusing on your partner. This way, the film has time t dissolve while you stay in the moment.

Is it is safe to use lubricants with VCF and in conjunction with other forms of birth control for added protection against pregnancy?

A lubricant may be used with the contraceptive film, but we strongly recommend that you insert the film first and wait the 15-minutes for it to dissolve; then utilize a lubricant.

Can I use 2 films/products at the same time?

We do not advise to do this. Also, do not use 2 nonoxynol-9 based products at the same time.

Can I go in a pool or a hot tub?

We do not recommend inserting the film and then entering a pool or hot tub as this may cause the spermicide to be washed out of the body prematurely and consequently lessen or even totally eliminate its effectiveness.

Nonoxynol-9 – Is the active ingredient that acts as a spermicide. How much N-9 is in the product?

Film – 28% Nonoxynol-9, this translates to roughly 72 milligrams per film.

How long does it last?

Once inserted, VCF remains effective for up to three hours and is intended for one act of intercourse. If additional intercourse occurs within that three-hour window, a new film must be inserted beforehand to ensure continued protection.

Each film dissolves fully and works by coating the vaginal tract. Be sure to wait at least 15 minutes after insertion for the film to dissolve before intercourse.

Can I get my money back?

Yeast Infection

VCF does not directly cause yeast infections, but changes in the vaginal environment—such as shifts in pH or moisture levels—can sometimes lead to an imbalance, making yeast overgrowth more likely. Where can I purchase Puralin products?

Puralin products can be purchased online at www.apothecus.com or by calling the toll free number at 1-800-879-2393 (9-5 pm EST)

Is it safe to use lubricants with VCF and with other forms of birth control?

Yes, you can use lubricant with VCF, but timing matters. To ensure the film dissolves properly insert it first and wait 15 minutes before applying any lubricant.

Film - How does it work?

The film dissolves to form a protective gel at the entrance of the cervix. It contains Nonoxynol-9 which works by disrupting sperm cell membranes to prevent fertilization. Once dissolved, it creates an environment that prevents sperm from reaching the egg.

Film - I didn’t wait the 15 minutes after insertion.

If you didn’t wait the full 15 minutes, it’s unclear whether the film had enough time to dissolve completely. While it’s still possible that the film dissolved fully and provided protection, a partially dissolved film may result in reduced effectiveness.

VCF should be inserted at least 15 minutes before intercourse to ensure it fully dissolves and provides the intended level of protection. While some people may find it dissolves faster due to body temperature and moisture levels, waiting the full 15 minutes is recommended for the best results.

For future use, be sure to insert a new film for each act of intercourse and allow enough time for it to activate before intimacy.
