HOW DO YOU USE VCF Vaginal Contraceptive pre-filled applicators?

Directions for Use
Be sure to read directions carefully.
1. Wash hands before using VCF Vaginal Contraceptive Gel.
2. Remove personal applicator and plunger from wrapper.
3. Pull blue cap off the top end of the personal applicator.
4. Insert the smaller, pointed tip of the plunger into the bottom end of the personal applicator until you feel resistance. Do not push the plunger past the feeling of resistance. The applicator is now ready for use.
5. Hold the personal applicator at the bottom. While using a finger to keep the plunger from falling out, gently insert the applicator into the vagina as far as it will comfortably go. Insertion is accomplished more easily when in a sitting position or while lying on your back with the knees bent.
6. Press the plunger to dispense VCF Vaginal Contraceptive Gel. While continuing to hold the plunger down, remove the applicator from the vagina.
7. Throw away the applicator, plunger and wrapper after use. Do not flush in toilet or re-use.
8. VCF Vaginal Contraceptive Gel is effective immediately and up to 1 hour after application.
9. Re-apply prior to each sex act, even if sex occurs within 1 hour of first application.
10. Douching is not recommended after using VCF Contraceptive Gel. However, should you desire to do so, wait at least 6 hours after sex to allow enough time for effective contraceptive protection.

How effective is VCF contraceptive Gel?

VCF is 94% effective when used properly. Be sure to read the enclosed directions carefully. It will be effective for up to 1 hour, or for each act of intercourse. Use a new applicator for each act of intercourse.

Can I use it after intercourse and have it still be effective?

No, a new applicator/dose must be used with each act of intercourse.

Is it safe for breastfeeding mothers?

Yes VCF is non-hormonal and safe for breastfeeding mothers.

Is it possible to have an allergic reaction to VCF?

If this occurs, we recommend you discontinue use and drink plenty of fluids. Symptoms should subside within 24 to 48 hours. However, if symptoms persist we recommend you see your physician to determine the exact cause of the irritation.

Is it harmful if ingested?

Nonoxynol-9 is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic and the other ingredients are commonly found in many personal care products. No reports or studies have been done to date. Nonoxynol-9 has been the subject of many studies and tests, and is a FDA approved spermicide. As per poison Control, N-9 contains anti-ionic detergents and soaps. If you experience discomfort, increase fluids. It is also possible to experience some numbness or tingling on the tongue or lips if accidentally ingested, but this is not harmful and these symptoms will subside rather quickly. Gel – Ingredients are non-toxic and not carcinogenic. Glycerin is found in many prepared foods.

Does VCF protect against STIs such as HIV?

No VCF does not protect against HIV or STDs. It is strongly suggested that you contact your health professional for the best method of STD prevention and HIV protection. Studies have raised concerns that products containing the spermicide nonoxynol-9 can irritate the vagina and rectum, which may increase the risk of getting HIV/AIDS from an infected partner. Therefore, we recommend using a latex condom without nonoxynol-9 if you or your partner have HIV/AIDS, multiple sex partners or HIV risk factors.

Should I be using more than one method of birth control?

You can use two methods of birth control at the same time. Using both will not give you 100% protection, but could give added protection if one method fails. Remember that since no method is 100% effective, there is no 100% guarantee, using more than one form of birth control will not necessarily give you 100% protection against pregnancy as no one method by itself is 100% effective. Do not use 2 or more applicatorfuls at a time or use 2 nonoxynol-9 products at a time. VCF film is 94% effective in preventing pregnancy when inserted properly. The use of a condom would give you protection against sexually transmitted diseases. The use of other forms of birth control would give you added protection against pregnancy.

Proper use and how do I use it?

VCF is 94% effective when used properly. Be sure to read the enclosed directions carefully.

Can I have oral sex while using the product?

Yes, the ingredients in VCF are non-toxic.

Is it is safe to use lubricants with VCF and in conjunction with other forms of birth control for added protection against pregnancy?

A lubricant may be used with the contraceptive film, but we strongly recommend that you insert the Gel first and it to then utilize a lubricant.

Can I use 2 applicators/products at the same time?

We do not advise to do this. Also, do not use 2 nonoxynol-9 based products at the same time.

Can I go in a pool or a hot tub?

We do not recommend inserting the Gel and then entering a pool or hot tub as this may cause the spermicide to be washed out of the body prematurely and consequently lessen or even totally eliminate its effectiveness.

Nonoxynol-9 – Is the active ingredient that acts as a spermicide. How much N-9 is in the product?

Gel – 4%, this translates to roughly 100 milligrams per applicator

How long does it last?
